TO TREAT OR NOT TO TREAT

Thousands of patients have successfully received life changing relief aftertreatment of their menopausal symptoms. The loss of hormones can contribute tothe loss of over 400 bodily functions. Hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness, lack of sex drive can beginas early as age 30 and progress as hormone levels decrease with age. Medicaltreatment can dramatically reduce symptoms and increase the quality of lifewhile simulataneously reducing the risk of a multitude of other medicalconditions.  The literature is confusingto the average person on whether or not hormonal replacement therapy is eithernecessary or beneficial.  As a result, patients are reluctant to seek medical attention and resort to over the counternatural remedies or sleeping with the air conditioner running on the coldestnights of winter.  The most wellpublicized study evaluating the use of hormones in menopause the Woman’s HealthInitiative is a decade old study focusing on synthetic hormone replacement therapy. You may have been told bymany to “Stop The Hormones!” They are blamed for causing cancer, heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, and even memory loss. Modern research disputes these claims. In reality, women who ignore hormonal deficiencies may actually be atfar greater risk for all of these medical conditions and more. 30+ years ofresearch in the most prominent medical journals overwhelmingly confirm thebenefits of natural hormonereplacement, specifically estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA andthyroid hormone. Our practice has the aim of not only helping with your presentsymptoms but to improve your health.

Bio-identicalhormone replacementtherapy, also known as “Natural Hormone Therapy,” is the specific use ofnatural and molecularly identical hormones that the human body makes as anaugmentation or replacement for its reduced production. The term“Bio-identical” was coined to describe unpatentable, plant-derived molecules hebelieved were identical to human hormones. The term “Natural” denotes thesource of the hormone as from a plant or an animal. Most lay people onlyrecognize plant sources though the medical community accepts animal sourcesalso as “bio-identical.”

Bio-identical hormones are most often used for the menopausal symptoms oftemperature instability leading to hot flashes, night sweats, chills, andflushing sensations. About 75-80% of women will experience these symptoms asthey enter menopause. It is also used for the dryness and discomfort of theaging vulva and vagina by replacing lost collagen and improving the blood flowto the genital area and increasing the natural moistness of vaginal tissues.Unfortunately, 100% of menopausal women will suffer from this dryness andpotential shrinkage of vaginal size if left untreated. Also significant inmenopause are the loss of good quality sleep and the sense of well-being.Tempers are shorter, there is reduced sexual desire, and diminished sexualresponse. The wicked cycle of hot flashes and night sweats lead to sleepdisturbance and frequent awakening and then fatigue resulting in short tempersand irritability. This can then impact interpersonal relationships and damagepersonal intimacy. Adrenal fatigue and thyroid dysfunction can also occur atthis time complicating the picture. A careful workup is needed to define andaddress these issues.

Bio-identical hormones used for modern treatment include estradiol, estriol, estrone, progesterone, testosterone, and dehydroepiansdrosterone (DHEA).Pregnenolone is another agent sometimes used. Most commonly they are made by acompounding pharmacy in the form of creams, pellets, pills, capsules, drops. Each route has its advantages and disadvantages. The ideal route is usually onethat bypasses the mouth and stomach to spare activation of the liver that mayproduce substances that increase the risk of clot formation.
